Ku Klux Klan Paraded on

Eve of Election in South

Cleveland Advocate

Jacksonville, Fla., Nov. 1, 1920 --- Determined in the effort to intimidate Colored men and women from casting their votes Tuesday, members of the Ku Klux Klan, 500 strong, paraded through the streets of this city Saturday night dressed in full regalia, with the fiery cross in front of the advancing column.

Banners reading, “We are here yesterday; we are here forever” were prominently displayed. When notice of the parade as planned was published in the “Florida Metropolis” urgent protestations were made by Colored organizations, to the Police Department and state officials against the parade. No mention was made in any quarter to comply with the requests.

The following day “The Metropolis” and Time Union carried stories with bold headlines which humorously referred to the fact that Colored citizens did not attempt to break up the parade in these words: “It was small wonder that the long white robed parade came in sight down the main street of the Negro section, there were few if any Negroes abroad; with the coming darkness most of the Negro population got indoors”.

A hypocritical humor afloat early today was to the effect that “the purpose of the parade was to prevent racial conflict on Election Day when large numbers of Negro men and women were expected at the polls.”
